After School & Summer Programs

In addition to the individual services we offer our girls, our After-School Program and Summer Program incorporates a group approach. Groups are important and influential factors in young girls’ lives.

Our After-School Program provides an opportunity for girls to interact with peers who have similar challenges and ambitions, get help with their homework, learn life skills, discover their unique talents and have fun. We know that a girl’s peers are one of the major influences in her life. Providing girls with a safe environment in which to build healthy relationships can make all the difference when it comes to the decisions she makes and the future she chooses.

In our After-School Program, we provide psycho-educational/therapeutic groups, activities and experiences in a peer group setting. Topics covered are based on the 10 Life Domains essential to a girl’s development and future success: education, health and wellness, family life, life skills, leadership development, recreation, female awareness, community service, cultural enrichment and spirituality.

At Gwen’s Girls, we also know that the more support we can offer to each of our girls, the better chance they have of realizing and reaching their potential. Other groups, workshops and projects offered in our After-School Program include:

  • Health and Wellness Education and Workshops
  • Educational Groups
  • Therapeutic Groups (e.g., grief and loss, sexual abuse, eating disorders)
  • Job Readiness Program
  • Career Guidance and Job Shadowing
  • Academic Enrichment and Tutoring Program
  • Community Service Projects

Although summer is a time for relaxation and fun, at Gwen’s Girls, summer camp is also a time for empowering girls through gender-specific programs, education and experiences.

For young girls, summer can bring hours of unstructured activity. Gwen’s Girls’ Summer Program is an excellent alternative. Each year, the curriculum for our eight-week summer camp, Camp Destiny, is developed around a theme that addresses the 4 Life Domains.  Previous themes include Health & Wellness, approached from a cross-cultural perspective that focused on a variety of wellness workshops and fun, healthy activities, and Civic and Cultural Awareness, which gave the girls an opportunity to advance their principles of leadership and culture and experience active learning and community service. Of course, what would a summer camp be without the usual summer favorites? Our field trips include:

Gwen’s Girls’ Summer Camp is open to all girls serviced through our Prevention Program and our Group Home.
